If only that game didn't have such an unbearably high encounter rate, I might actually be tempted to call it good! (Yes, I know I can turn the encounters off, and I do do that when I just can't take anymore of them, but I wish the game's encounter rate was lower, period, or that the Boost menu had an option to reduce the encounter rate but not turn them off completely). I like FF2 is probably the most well-balanced it's ever been even without using boost, but by cutting my stat attribute gain rate in half while boosting my skill and magic gain by 4x, I think I finally found a way to make FF2 fun. The more SNES-styled sprites seem like a weird, almost arbitrary step back. But I still wish they looked as good as the PSP games. I do like how unified the games are in their appearance and playstyle, though. and it even came with a full extra game attached! So I think I'll take a bit of a break after finishing 3, 'cause 4 is definitely going to be a letdown in that regard. I don't really mind the loss of the GBA/PSP content for FF1 and 2, since it wasn't that great anyway, but the SNES games are going to be hurt by that-4 in particular is going to be hurt because it benefited the most from the GBA additions (being able to switch your party around at the end of the game was a dream come true for me when it happened, and the extra content in 4 is smartly designed to take advantage of that feature and require you to use your whole team), not to mention FF4 PSP was the best-looking of the PSP games. I do understand that the sprites are "closer" to the original sprites (as just one example, FF1 White Wizard looks like a dude with long red hair again, not a dirty-blonde woman as in PSP FF1), but I honestly don't care the PSP sprites are simply more visually appealing. I still wish these games had been redone in the style of the PSP versions of 1, 2, and 4. It's like when I played FF5 for the first time all those years ago and could definitely tell how it was a step in the road between FF4 and FF6. It's not the NES game, but I can already see how this game forms a link in the chain between FF2 and FF4. I'm finally playing Final Fantasy 3-the real Final Fantasy 3-at long last. I think the first two FFs in particular have been released at least 7 different times? NES, WonderSwan, PSOne, GBA, PSP, IOS, and now the Pixel Remaster. It feels so amazing to have all six of these games in one place, on one system, on one cartridge, at one time, especially considering the incredibly messy development history many of these games have, what with all their previous versions and ports and re-releases and whatnot. ![]() So I finally got a physical copy of this game.
